Beginning February 6th, volunteers have been dispatched every week to Haiti. Each team, consisting of about 10-12 volunteers including physicians, para-medical personnel, young adults and general volunteers, serves for one week. These teams have served about 300 patients per day. By the end of February over 10,000 patients had been seen. In addition to medical care, Narayan Seva was delivered in the form of dwelling tents, food and clothing.
Medical services were provided at the following places to date.
- Franciscan Church Saint Alexandre Chapel
- Christian Assembly of Bobin & Boucan-la-Pluie
- Port-au-Prince General Hospital
- Acute Trauma Care Center
- Communities of Sai center members
Medical supplies needed for the medical camps including medicines and patient care supplies were brought from Santo Domingo and also by the volunteers from the different participating countries. Translators were provided by the churches and the local areas to help the doctors communicate with the patients.
In the general hospital, specialized services such as anesthesiology, orthopedics and vascular surgery have been provided. At the acute trauma care center, specialized services such as plastic surgery have been provided. Additionally paramedical personnel such as nurses and non-medical volunteers have provided assistance to the medical teams both at the medical camps and at the general hospital. Young adults have been actively involved at all levels in these medical services.
One of the most inspiring aspect of the trips has been the beautiful smiles of the people of Haiti especially the children who lit up the sad atmosphere with hope and love. They make one look to the future than to the past. These children are the future of Haiti. Sathya Sai volunteers especially Young Adults have worked with these children getting them involved in activities such as games and playing music.
The way people in Haiti live under these difficult circumstances is a testament to their faith, hope and love. Heartfelt songs fill the air whenever people gather to comfort themselves. Every Sunday morning one can see people dressed in their best walking down the streets to attend Sunday mass in the church at 7:00 AM. Such resilience and love lifts the spirits of all the volunteers and enables them to continue their hard work.
