Updates

June 2010

Following the January earthquake, the Sathya Sai Organization is continuing its work in Haiti on a daily basis. The month of June was filled with several activities that included the following:

  1. Medical camps at both churches: five days a week for three of the four weeks. A total of 50 – 150 patients were seen each day based on the number of doctors serving each week bringing up the running total of patients seen since the earthquake to about 34,000.
  2. Narayan seva: During the month of June about 27,000 hot meals were served to communities in Port-au-Prince, the patients attending the medical camps and the children at the orphanage.
  3. Workshop for Delmas Youth: “Leadership in Action: Awakening and Transformation” – a workshop was conducted by Sathya Sai youth for the youth in the Delmas area. The three-day workshop focused on 1) imparting education in Human Values and 2) knowledge and skills to serve their country. The training project specifically focused on their participation in Haiti relief efforts, such as translations during medical camps, food and water distribution, as well as well as their own initiatives of environmental clean up, basic health education and educational work with children.
  4. Young Adult activities: The Delmas youth are educating children in their communities. With the help of the Sathya Sai young adults, the youth in the area initiated a project to educate children who have been displaced by the earthquake. They met with local community leaders including government leaders to discuss their plans and obtain support. The youth are also organizing school supplies for these children who hope to go back to school after summer. Additionally, they have taken part in some community clean-up activities along with Sathya Sai young adults.
  5. Construction of New Homes for Sathya Sai families – the Sathya Sai team from Trinidad built a total of four pre-fabricated homes. A team of 11 non-medical members from Trinidad came to build these homes during a course of one week. These homes have a living room, a small kitchen and two bedrooms and are designed to withstand severe weather.

The monthly activities were also augmented by the visits of representatives of the Sri Sathya Sai World Foundation to Haiti during June and early part of July. Dr. Michael Goldstein, Chairman, Prashanthi Council visited Haiti during the early part of June along with Mr. John Behner, Zonal Chairman, Central and South America. They visited all the sites where service activities are being done including the two churches and met with the church leaders and the leaders of the local Sathya Sai organization to understand the ongoing issues and to find out how best we can serve in Haiti. Later, Dr. Narendranath Reddy, Chairman, Sri Sathya Sai International Medical Committee, Dr. Venkat Sadanand, Director, Medical Camps and Rotations and Dr. Hari Conjeevaram, medical director, Haiti Relief Project, visited Haiti to assess ongoing work with the medical camps, Narayan seva and inspect the newly constructed homes for the Sai families. They visited the two churches and the orphanage and met with the church leaders to thank them for the opportunity they are giving us to serve the people of Haiti. Additionally, they met with the local Sathya Sai organization leaders and key coordinators for all the activities in Haiti to assess the progress and address future needs for service in Haiti. The church leaders thanked the Sathya Sai organization and the teams for services provided with love on an ongoing basis and hoped we will continue our services. The Sathya Sai organization is currently among the very few organizations that currently provides free medical services for the needy people and also serves food for the children at the orphanage.
